Today, it is home to 135,000 people and is a busy market town. Ipswich is a vibrant town with an interesting past. Ipswich has a large town centre that offers a unique shopping experience. It has large department stores as well as smaller specialist retailers. There are a wide range of restaurants and public houses in the centre and an open-air market. There is history around every corner, with beautiful buildings old and new.

Ipswich Waterfront

The Ipswich waterfront is where the town started. It is thought that there has been a dock here for almost 1500 years. The port grew and as a result, so did Ipswich. It was a busy commercial port with lots of factories and warehouses built around the dock. By the 19th century the port was so successful that one of the finest buildings in Ipswich was built - the Old Custom House.
A lot changed over the years and by the 1990s most of the buildings were abandoned. In the last twenty years the area has been redeveloped and is now one of the main social areas of the town. With yachts moored in the harbour and surrounded by expensive apartment blocks the waterfront area has become very popular.
The University of Suffolk opened in 2007 and is also located on the waterfront making the area even more popular for nightlife.
